What are Categories of Essential Oils?

Essential oils fall into categories according to their texture and other qualities such as weight and ph level.

Essential oils first of all are not always oils. There are the essence of plants, stems, leaves, bark, rinds, roots, etc., that have been pressed out of the original material or leeched out with alcohol, steam, or some other solvent.

The actual characteristics of these products vary widely according to the characteristics of the substance that they are extracted from.

If the essential oil has an absolute character it is an oily liquid. Essences that are concrete are waxy or resinous in nature.

A pomade is actually a solid oil. The way to use pomades is to rub this substance in your hands causing friction and heat. This heat melts it enough to be spread on the surface where you intend to use it.

Most essential oils are actually a tincture which is in the form of a thin somewhat runny liquid. Tinctures can be used directly but most often are added to other products and then applied to the skin.
